The critically acclaimed and award nominated Danish songwriter, singer and guitar player with a special knack for dark, mythological Americana has released his fifth album. Better Times consists of 11 stark original songs by CS Nielsen plus an eerie interpretation of the cowboy classic ‘Cool Water’, written by Bob Nolan in 1936. The album thematically deals with aspects of time – something we constantly lose or something we are constantly granted. The existentially and spiritually charged lyrics grope for hope despite hopelessness, togetherness despite loneliness and faith in redemption despite fear of damnation. The music is folksy and simple, varied and catchy. Better Times was recorded in CS Nielsen’s living room on the small Danish island of Samsø, where he resides with his family. Like its predecessor Pilgrims (2020), the album was produced by Johnny Stage, who also provides electric guitar and twangy bass on most songs. Michael Lund plays lap steel, dobro and Omnichord and Johannes Gissel plays drums and keys.
