Late Runner's second album, You're an Animal, is released by Crunchy Frog on November 17, 2023. You're an Animal follows the critically acclaimed 2021-album Nothing's Real Anymore and was conceived by Asger Tarpgaard - formerly of the seminal Danish band superheroes - in a tsunami of inspiration that took place between the completion of the debut album and its release. In his homeland, Asger Tarpgaard became known for his breakthrough at the age of 16 in the late 90s with the power pop band superheroes. A journey that, through the noughties, resulted in a host of acclaimed concerts, three albums, five EPs, and praise from none other than Beck. He subsequently continued with old bandmates Thomas Troelsen and Tanja Forsberg Simonsen (ONBC) in Private, and played in Lightwave Empire with Bjarke Niemann from Spleen United. Back to the present! While the debut album, Nothing’s Real Anymore, was created in the midst of deep depression, You’re An Animal was made during "... a sort of high." It's an album that takes place “... on the way back from the brink.” Behind Late Runner is songwriter Asger Tarpgaard, known from superheroes, Private and Lightwave Empire. “The music industry is young (or focuses on 'the young'), and I am not,” Tarpgaard says regarding Late Runner. “Only now, midlife, can I make the music I’m making. I wasn't ready for it until now.” Hence the name. Late Runner's take on indie-pop is dreamy and soberly composed. Drawing inspiration from the likes of The Beach Boys, Air, Beck, The Beatles and their respective solo efforts, and nu-disco, it blends modern clarity with an ear for original and naturally resonant melody, 70's rock, folk, and 00's indie. It's thoughtful music, expressed through Asger Tarpgaard's vulnerable, warm voice and introspective lyrics.
