Description:
Brand new release from, the masters of lo-fi post-punk/psych, Chapter 24! 2 recently unearthed tracks, recorded in 1989, right after the release of their classic debut album “Tin Invaders”, due out now on an extremely limited (100 pink vinyl, numbered, copies) collectors’ 7-inch single, on the band’s own label, distributed by Sound Effect.
In early 1989, a year after the release of his "official" debut album "Tin Invaders", the headquarters of Chapter 24 had been moved from Ioannina to Athens. The ensemble was consolidated into an "orthodox" quartet with the following line-up: Periklis Boulouchtsis (electric guitar, vocals) Yiannis Mitsis (acoustic and electronic drums) Antonis Livieratos (organ, electric piano, synth, vocals) Vangelis Boulouchtsis (fretless electric bass, vocals).
They rented a basement in Goudi, turned it into a studio (which after an unexpected evening "visit" by armed policemen acquired the rather sarcastic name "Giafka-Sound") and started working. Recordings continued to be made on a four-channel cassette player. That is, by the same method by which the group had recorded all its material up to that time. The first product of this period were two new songs with English lyrics, “Dwarves” and “Coming of Age” and a Greek-speaking song entitled "No One Scares Me". They then decided to concentrate on completing the instrumental material which was later released under the title "The Index of Coincidences" (Hitch Hyke, 1995). Consequently, the songs remained unreleased and, essentially, forgotten.
Listening to them again 35 years later, their creators decided that they deserved a better fortune. The master of the Greek-speaking song "No One Scares Me" over the years had, unfortunately, suffered irreparable damage. The other two, however, could be saved. So, we are pleased to present you not only in digital, but also in physical form the single "Dwarves". (With "Coming of age" as "flip side"), which, although it is a "fresh" release, of 2024, paradoxically, comes directly from the '80s.
The lyrics of the "gasped" “Dwarves”, with the characteristic guitar riff, are about the delirium of an imaginary guy who enlists, equally imaginary, stories with vicious dwarves and witches with flying broomsticks, in order to convince someone, anyone, to sleep with him. While those of the more psychedelic “Coming of Age” refer to a girl's rushed coming of age and were written on the occasion of the announcement by the younger sister of one of the group members that she was going to get married.
For fans of technical details, the recording of both tracks has followed the same procedure: The tracks were played by the band live in the studio (but without voices) and recorded in stereo on two of the four channels of the four-channel recorder, leaving two more free to record the vocals. The mixing was done without the use of external signal processors (since these were not part of the equipment of the makeshift studio) with the help of the integrated elementary mixer in the four-channel. The digitization of the analogue master was done by Dimitris Karageorgos. Mastering by Yiannis Christodoulatos. The sketches on the labels of both sides (painted at the same time as the recording) are by Vangelis Boulouchtsis. The photo on the back cover is by Panos Evangelos. The artwork of the cover, as well as the overall graphic design was done by George Fotopoulos. The single is an independent production (K24 - Limited Visibility Label, 1989/2024) and is distributed as a collector's item in 100 numbered pink vinyl copies by Soundeffect Records.
